Why are so many women going missing and being murdered in Virginia?

Jesse Leroy Matthew, Junior received his first prison sentence in October 2015.  He pleaded no contest to the attempted rape and murder of a woman in Fairfax, Virginia in 2005. The judge sentenced him to three life sentences. Then in March of 2016, Matthew pleaded guilty to the murders of Morgan Harrington and Hannah Graham. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of early release. 

These are the crimes we know Jesse Matthew committed. This week's episode concentrated on unsolved missing or murdered women that fit within Matthew's timeline.

Autumn Wind Day:
Jesse Matthew attended Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia from January 2003 until October 2003. He left the university after being accused of sexual assault for the second time. 

During the time he was in Newport News, 24-year-old Autumn Wind Day went missing. At 4:30 PM on July 24, 2003, Autumn was seen at the Executive Inn Hotel on Jefferson Avenue with an unidentified black male. This is the last time police have confirmed Autumn was seen. But some reports claim she was seen at the Food Lion on Warwick Boulevard around 7 PM. Her car was found in the grocery store parking lot the next day.

When Autumn disappeared, she was 5'6" and 180 pounds. Her nose is pierced. Autumn has brown hair and brown hair. She was last seen wearing a light-colored shirt and gray sweatpants. Police have not been able to connect Jesse Matthew to her disappearance.

Sophie May Rivera:
Sophie was another woman who went missing from the Newport News area while Jesse Matthew attended Christopher Newport University. 31-year-old Sophie Rivera was last seen at her home on September 3, 2003. Her 31st Street residence was seven miles from CNU. Jesse Matthew left the CNU football team five days after her disappearance. 

When Sophie disappeared, she was 5'3" and 105 pounds. She has scars on her arms and is black and Hispanic. Sophie has brown eyes and black hair.

Police have not been able to connect Jesse Matthew to her disappearance.

Cassandra Morton:
23-year-old Cassandra Morton went missing the week before Morgan Harrington. On October 10, 2009, Cassandra disappeared from a neighborhood in Lynchburg, Virginia near Park Avenue. She was scheduled to enter rehab on the 12th, but no one heard from her. 

Her remains were found on November 30th on Candlers Mountain near Camp Hydaway. The camp is own by Liberty University-the college Matthew attended from 2000-2002.

Samantha Clarke:
On September 13th, 2010, 19-year-old Samantha Clarke left her Orange, Virginia home. Her 12-year-old brother told their mom that she left the house. When Samantha's mom got home, she could tell that Samantha had changed clothes before she left the house. Her pajamas were on the bed. But the only item Samantha took with her were her house keys.  

Samantha had started hanging out with a new group of friends. One of those friends, a 45-year-old man named Randy Taylor, was later convicted of murdering a young woman.

No one has seen or heard from Samantha since that night. At the time of her disappearance, Samantha was 5'4" weighing about 145 pounds. She has brown eyes and brown hair. Samantha has multiple tattoos. a Playboy bunny tattoo on her right arm, a Tigger tattoo on her right ankle, and two dolphin tattoos on her lower back.

This case has not been directly connected to Jesse Matthew.

Sage Smith:
On November 20th, 2012, 19-year-old transgender woman Sage Smith told her roommate she was going to meet a date. The date was supposed to be with a man named Erik McFadden. They were supposed to meet near the Amtrak station in Charlottesville. 

At 6:30 PM Sage is seen on West Main Street near the Amtrak station. But there is no sign of McFadden meeting Sage there. It is the last time Sage has been seen.
McFadden was questioned by police initially and scheduled a formal interview the following week. He never showed. Now the Charlottesville Police Department have two missing persons cases--Sage Smith and 28-year-old Erik McFadden.

When Sage disappeared, she was 5'11" and 130 pounds. Sage was last seen wearing a black jacket, dark gray sweatpants, a black scarf and gray boots.

McFadden is believed to be in Baltimore or Joppa, MD; Lake City or Columbia, SC; NYC; Rochester, NY; Atlanta, GA or unknown locations on the West Coast. Charlottesville PD believes he is a "critical person of interest."

The cases we discussed this week are unsolved cases. They may or may not have been committed by Jesse Matthew. But in each case there is still a family seeking justice and answers.
